Master and PhD Candidates


Welcome to apply Master and PhD program in our group. We are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic students with an interest in high temperature catalysis, organic catalysis, electrochemistry, bio-catalysis, also and theoretical chemistry. We have no requirements on the potential Master and PhD students except the interests in catalysis. We will help you develop the ability to design and synthesize catalysts, perform the catalytic reaction, understand catalytic mechanism and renovate the catalytic processes.

Undergraduates


Undergraduate students can join our group as trainees, and do some research in spare time. Scientific papers and scientific research experience will help the undergraduate students gain extra marks for the graduation reply and the job interview.

Research

Catalysis is the increase in the rate of a chemical reaction by decreasing the activation energy under the assistant of another substance called "catalyst". Only tiny amounts of catalysts are required since the catalysts are not consumed in the catalysis. Catalysis has penetrated into our daily life including clothes, food, drink, transportation. With a rapid population boom, we are facing many challenges, such as energy crisis, air/water/soil pollution, health.
Catalysis research is essential to figure our those problems by aiming at waste/pollutant reduction (e.g. in automotive catalysis), more efficient and clean chemicals manufacturing (e.g. higher product yields), and new and useful products (e.g. medicines and transportation fuels). Catalysis also help to develop new technologies for the production of sustainable materials, chemicals and fuels from renewable resources.
Our group focuses on the heterogeneous catalysis to design novel catalysts with unique configurations, produce useful chemicals through a green and energy-saving process and improve the durability of the catalysts under the conditions operated. We also employ various techniques including in situ experiments and density functional theory calculations to understand the catalytic mechanisms at molecular level. Our goals are to find novel catalytic processes featured with high safety, energy-saving, green, high atomic efficiency as well as low cost.

 

In our group we work on:
1. Heterogeneous energy catalysis. We develop efficient and robust catalysts for hydrogen production and/or oxygen evolution through water electrolysis, photocatalytic water splitting and organic catalytic hydrogen production.
2. Heterogeneous organic catalysis. We design and control synthesis of novel catalysts by regulating the defects, interface of liquid/solid, metal-support interaction to increase the available amounts of surface active sites, enhance catalytic activity of active sites, improve the chemoselectivity and avoid the secondary contamination.
3. Heterogeneous gas catalysis. We mainly focus on CO2 (a greenhouse gas) conversion into useful chemicals.
4. Heterogeneous biocatalysis. We control surface properties of metal oxides and make them biomimetic natural enzymes. Based on those, we develop new applications of nanozymes for clinic diagnosis and disease therapy.
